Quilling workshop at Snehadhara foundation

The workshop was fun-filled and packed with loads of creativity among the kids and adults. The newspaper quilled craft was introduced to the group. The session started with warm-up songs and introducing newspaper as the main medium for the craft.

The kids with special needs understood the concept of rolling the paper and tried rolling the newspaper to strips. It was wonderful to see the excitement and the focus that they exhibited while learning the technique. It was not easy for them to do on their own initially but with support they were able to roll the newspaper into strips.

When the rolled strips were handed over to them and were asked of them to shape into coils, some were able to do it on their own while the others accomplished it with some support. The creativity that the support group and rest of the regular children showed was mind-blowing. These kids were asked to roll out different shapes from the newspaper strips and glue together to form an artefact. Hairband, necklace, anklet, binocular, spectacles, table coasters,  face, kumkum holder, chariot etc. were created out of newspaper quilling.

The group was so fascinated about their own creations and with regular practice their motor skills will improve further and they will be able to create different artefacts by combining different shaped quilled coils.

Happy Diwali

Diwali or Deepavali is the Hindu festival of lights. Diwali is traditionally celebrated by lighting diyas and candles, praying to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, bursting crackers and meeting friends and family to exchange Diwali greetings and gifts.

The quilling of the candle light holder, the bird shaped holder and the Ganesha were completed using newspaper/magazines.

Anything about India

This month DT twist on the challenge theme is “Anything about India”.

Being a proud Indian, I have created two DT projects for the current month.

  • Unity in diversity:

Unity in diversity means oneness despite multiplicities. India is a classic example of this motto and has thrived over several decades with this phrase as its guiding principle. India is a country where individual or social differences in physical attributes, race, religion and culture are not seen as conflict; rather, these differences are looked upon as the multiplicities that enrich the society.

The quilled earring symbolizes and reinforces this oneness amongst us, the citizens of this great democracy.

“A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.” – Mahatma Gandhiji

  • The Peacock(National bird of India) has been a prominent feature in Indian literature as its resplendent beauty is a source of inspiration for many. It is a symbol of grace, joy, beauty and love.

Freedom is something that money can’t buy, it was earned through the struggles of many bravehearts. Let us honour them today and always.

This quilled canvas is a mark of appreciation to women who have been the reason for our birth, growth, success and survival on planet earth.
As the saying goes, Beauty is only skin deep – so respect and love women for who they are and not for how they look.
True unbiased affection, respecting her for who she is and nurturing her as needed are key to capturing her heart. Jewellery can help win her heart too 🙂 Jewellery be it any material attracts women’s attention next to cloth shopping.

Some inspiring quotes on love from

“It is easy to love the people far away. It is not always easy to love those close to us. It is easier to give a cup of rice to relieve hunger than to relieve the loneliness and pain of someone unloved in our own home. Bring love into your home for this is where our love for each other must start.”

“Love is not love, which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove.

Oh, no! it is an ever-fixed mark

That looks on tempests.. and is never shaken. ”

Hope to meet you all every month with my inspiring creations.

Tribute to Sun God for a glorious summer

This year has been quite a warm and scorching summer(March-May) especially down South of India. Even Bangalore, which enjoys mild summers traditionally, has seen spikes upwards of 40 degree Celsius.
So, I decided to put together a quilled art work in dedication of the Sun god 🙂
sun_madhubani3
In Hindu mythology, Surya aka the sun god, represents the visible form of the divine, one that you can plainly see every day. Depicted as a red man with bright eyes and four arms, the deity is believed to heal the sick and to bring good fortune. The Sun thus represents the soul, vitality, courage, willpower, authority, royalty and so on. He is often associated with reds, coppers and metallic colors.

Agriculture has been the primary means of occupation and livelihood of the Madhubani community in Bihar. They worship the sun for a good harvest and they have created several pieces of art themed around the Sun god.

Inspired by the Madhubani paintings (Mithila painting – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mithila_Art), that is characterized by eye-catching geometric patterns and bright colors, I have attempted to recreate the essence of Madhubani paintings in the form of a quilled Sun god. Painted at the center of the canvas to denote that the Sun is the center of the universe; the big bulging eyes signify the divine and ever-vigilant nature of the sun.

Do you want to build a snowflake?

December is the month of fun and holidays. Kids throughout the world eagerly wait to celebrate christmas especially for the gifts. My kids are so well-behaved during this month hoping to receive something nice by the end of the year even though we do not celebrate Christmas 🙂

I thought of making an artefact to go with Christmas and what better than a snowflake to remind everyone of the fun and holidays.

Rolling the paper strips into loose/tight coils and creating various shapes out of that is my favourite technique. Snowflakes can bring out your best of creativity.

I have put together instructables for this at http://www.instructables.com/id/Do-You-Want-to-Build-a-Snowflake/

snowflake7snowflake

snowflake4snowflake3

snowflake6snowflake5

Quilled snowflakes may seem easy to make but takes lots of effort to assemble the tiny pieces together to create this wonderful pattern.

This snowflake glitters during the day and it glows in the dark with the radio-luminescent paint.

Submitting this snowflakes as my entry for this year end December 2016 challenge
