Happy New Year

Watched *It’s a wonderful life*, an American classic starring James Stewart and Donna Reed. It’s a great movie (that I enjoyed watching with my husband), reiterating one of life’s most important lessons “Count your blessings”. As we approach the end of 2022, I implore you to cherish all the wonderful moments, being grateful for them and look forward to a wonderful 2023.

Happy New Year!

Enjoy your life!

Winter themed quilling

Winter brings warmth and great memories for everyone. Unexpected snowfalls change our mood instantly, bringing out the shutterbug in us for photographs and videos 🙂

During the last few days leading up to the end of the year, the snowfall and the holidays kindle the creativity in us – be it decorating the house with lights or decorating the Christmas tree with artefacts or meeting friends and family or taking a vacation to de-stress our minds and so on.

New country…new experiences…and new weather have enabled me to get back to my passion for quilling and crafts; I would like to share my creations over the last two months. I was delighted to spend time teaching crafts for the middle schoolers and the community members during this holiday season to decorate their homes with wall hanging artefacts using used magazines/books.

Tutorials for the listed crafts can be found under thepaperolles.wordpress.com/tutorials/

Spread Good Vibes

Hello all,

Trust this finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy.

Neurological studies emphasize the magic of 21 days – repeating a routine for 21 days makes it a habit; well, repeating the same routine for 90 days makes it a permanent habit. With close to 3 months of staying at home, I am certain everyone would have developed some “new” positive habits and routines, that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible – be it exercising or doing yoga in the morning or just sipping hot coffee with a book in the evening. I can think of one habit that has silently crept in to all our lives (definitely mine) – hope. The hope that the pandemic situation will improve and life will approach “normal”.

A famous leader once said – “Everything that is done in the world is done by hope”.

I would like to express my gratitude to our community helpers, without whose sacrifice and tireless work, we would not have been able to fight this pandemic.

With hope, gratitude and prayers, here is a typography that I quilled during the lockdown to “Spread Good Vibes”

Thanks for your support.

Quilling workshop at Snehadhara foundation

The workshop was fun-filled and packed with loads of creativity among the kids and adults. The newspaper quilled craft was introduced to the group. The session started with warm-up songs and introducing newspaper as the main medium for the craft.

The kids with special needs understood the concept of rolling the paper and tried rolling the newspaper to strips. It was wonderful to see the excitement and the focus that they exhibited while learning the technique. It was not easy for them to do on their own initially but with support they were able to roll the newspaper into strips.

When the rolled strips were handed over to them and were asked of them to shape into coils, some were able to do it on their own while the others accomplished it with some support. The creativity that the support group and rest of the regular children showed was mind-blowing. These kids were asked to roll out different shapes from the newspaper strips and glue together to form an artefact. Hairband, necklace, anklet, binocular, spectacles, table coasters,  face, kumkum holder, chariot etc. were created out of newspaper quilling.

The group was so fascinated about their own creations and with regular practice their motor skills will improve further and they will be able to create different artefacts by combining different shaped quilled coils.

Happy Diwali

Diwali or Deepavali is the Hindu festival of lights. Diwali is traditionally celebrated by lighting diyas and candles, praying to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, bursting crackers and meeting friends and family to exchange Diwali greetings and gifts.

The quilling of the candle light holder, the bird shaped holder and the Ganesha were completed using newspaper/magazines.

Jewellery adds beauty to the festivities and hence the quilled Jhumka.

Here’s hoping that the divine lights of Diwali bring peace, prosperity and good health.

Anything about India

This month DT twist on the challenge theme is “Anything about India”.

Being a proud Indian, I have created two DT projects for the current month.

  • Unity in diversity:

Unity in diversity means oneness despite multiplicities. India is a classic example of this motto and has thrived over several decades with this phrase as its guiding principle. India is a country where individual or social differences in physical attributes, race, religion and culture are not seen as conflict; rather, these differences are looked upon as the multiplicities that enrich the society.

The quilled earring symbolizes and reinforces this oneness amongst us, the citizens of this great democracy.

“A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.” – Mahatma Gandhiji

  • The Peacock(National bird of India) has been a prominent feature in Indian literature as its resplendent beauty is a source of inspiration for many. It is a symbol of grace, joy, beauty and love.

Freedom is something that money can’t buy, it was earned through the struggles of many bravehearts. Let us honour them today and always.

This quilled canvas is a mark of appreciation to women who have been the reason for our birth, growth, success and survival on planet earth.
As the saying goes, Beauty is only skin deep – so respect and love women for who they are and not for how they look.
True unbiased affection, respecting her for who she is and nurturing her as needed are key to capturing her heart. Jewellery can help win her heart too 🙂 Jewellery be it any material attracts women’s attention next to cloth shopping.

Some inspiring quotes on love from

“It is easy to love the people far away. It is not always easy to love those close to us. It is easier to give a cup of rice to relieve hunger than to relieve the loneliness and pain of someone unloved in our own home. Bring love into your home for this is where our love for each other must start.”

“Love is not love, which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove.

Oh, no! it is an ever-fixed mark

That looks on tempests.. and is never shaken. ”

Hope to meet you all every month with my inspiring creations.

With love,
